Classes for Ages 5-8
Story Switcheroo (ages 5-8, family class)
Parents and children will partner in this class to explore the wonders of fairy tales. Using favorite traditional tales as a starting point, young writers will create original scenes and stories complete with illustrations.
Telling Tales (ages 7-10, family class)
Telling Tales is a class where parents partner with children to explore tall tales, ancient myths, and favorite legends. Children will build on story elements common to those tales as they hone their ability to tell stories aloud and in writing.
Classes for Ages 9-10
The Writer’s Jungle Online (ages 9-14, parent is student)
Our foundational class. This is where we recommend everyone with writers in this age range begin. TWJO is the online version of the first 9 chapters of the Writer’s Jungle. It offers an environment where families receive support, modeling, and gentle accountability to complete the processes described in the manual.
Arrow Book Club (ages 9-12, child is student)
Arrow Book Club facilitates book discussion on excellent works of literature. This rich experience of putting thoughts and insight into writing will create the foundation for applying the insights to academic formats later.
Comic Strip Capers (ages 9-18, child is student)
Comic Strip Capers will teach students how to write a comic strip that explores both the properties of narrative and artwork.
Groovy Grammar Workshop (ages 9-14, family class)
Groovy Grammar Workshop empowers families to implement a natural approach to teaching grammar. This workshop stands the whole concept of grammar on its head. Rather than studying terminology and dissecting sentences, students are encouraged to play with language, to explore how words bump up against each other and generate meaning.
Just So Stories (ages 9-12, parent is student)
The Just So Stories course exposes kids to the classic animal tales in Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories. Brave Writer techniques such as list-making, freewriting, revision strategies, and editing are all used in this new context of story-writing. A great follow-up to The Writer’s Jungle Online.
Middle School Writing Projects (ages 9-14, child is student)
Middle School Writing Projects allows kids to show off their expertise on any given school subject or passion in a project of their choice. Perfect for middle school, and for families who want experience with non-fiction writing in preparation for academic formats in high school.
Movie Discussion Club (ages 9-18, child is student)
Movie Discussion Clubs expose children to the literature of film. These classes teach students to discuss movies using appropriate cinematic language for analysis, while also teaching them about the nature of plot, characterization, setting, and more. Appropriate for ages 9-18, depending on the films offered.
Nature Journaling (ages 9-18, family class)
Nature Journaling provides an introduction and exploration of how to record observations of the natural world in word and art. Each student’s journal will offer the opportunity to experience connection with the natural world.
Playing with Poetry: Discovery (ages 9-18, family class)
Playing with Poetry: Discovery is a class that gets the entire family writing a variety of poems for four weeks. A great class for reluctant writers who may resist other kinds of writing.

Playing with Poetry: Exploration is a class that gets the entire family writing a variety of poems for four weeks. A great class for reluctant writers who may resist other kinds of writing.
Shakespeare Family Workshop (ages 9-18, family class)
The Shakespeare Family Workshop introduces families to the world of the Bard. This hands-on five-week workshop is great for all kinds of learners.
Skip into Science (ages 9-14, chid is student)
With Skip into Science, children will ask, think, play, and share like a scientist—from question to research to experiment to a final written project.
Spinning a Folktale (ages 9-14, child is student)
Spinning a Folktale is an encouraging class for a child who is new to Brave Writer and either a reluctant or an eager writer. It’s also a fun way to subtly add some geography to one’s homeschool.

Writing a Greek Myth gives kids obsessed with mythology and Rick Riordan the chance to write their own mythological adventures. One of Brave Writer’s most popular classes for this age group.
Write for Fun: Dream Big (ages 9-14, child is student)
Write for Fun: Dream Big is designed to enrich students’ writing experiences and help them expand their toolkit of writing prompts and activities to be used in any writing endeavor. Writing prompts range from memory photos, to updating nursery rhymes, to writing from the perspective of an animal.
Write for Fun: Go Wild (ages 9-14, child is student)
Write for Fun: Go Wild gives kids a chance to enjoy writing. It’s a 3-week romp through creative writing that focuses on content over mechanics. Writing prompts range from scrounged poetry, to exploring the neighborhood, to the always-fun freewriting frenzy.
Write for Fun: Fly High (ages 9-14, child is student)
Write for Fun: Fly High encourages kids to let their creative energy emerge in writing without formats or focus on mechanics. Writing prompts range from interviewing a famous character, to creating a tour guide, to exploring famous thingamajigs.

College Admissions Essay (ages 15-18, child is student)
Whip your college application essay into shape with a class designed to walk you painlessly, perhaps even pleasurably, through the process. We use the Common App as our model, but students are free to bring the writing prompts from specific colleges into the class, if they like.
